have difficulty remembering or applying letter-sound relationships
guess at words instead of decoding or applying known rules/strategies
avoid reading or become frustrated easily
struggle with spelling age-appropriate words
work hard, but are not making the progress expected for their age or grade level
Early reading difficulties rarely resolve on their own. Children who aren’t reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade often face long-term academic challenges and are significantly more likely to disengage or drop out.
